The bright side

I know the newspapers and TV stations and internet new sources have made the cause du juor the collapsing state of the economy(which I still will argue a tad), and it really is a big deal when things suck ass like they do at the moment.

However, you know what I can't get down with? This whole "golden era" bullshit that people espouse. "In the 30's...., In the 50's it was like Leave it to Beaver...., In the late-60's..... We'll never see another boom, except for the one in the 80's, like we saw in the late 90's/early-00's.... )

Now, I might be wrong on that stuff, because I'm a bit of an optimist(I guess you would say) and not the best at economics. All I know is that I make X dollars and I'm not starving. Can I afford Armani suits, a Mercedes, a 3 bedroom condo downtown and to buy $8 beers after already paying a $20 covere? Fuck no! BUT, if I don't piss away money on consumables, I do "alright".

Anyway, the original point is this: When my roommate and I came home from working at the bar tonight, the house was 58 degrees. So, first I was like, maybe we should put on the heat... But then I was like, nah, nevermind, we both have space heaters in our rooms, so why fuck around with heating the whole house when all we'll use is a tiny bit? Makes sense, right?

Anyhow, I just had to use the watercloset and it was fucking freezing outside this room! For a minute I thought about how terrible it was that we dont' really have enough money to heat this 4 story house properly(doesn't help that, IMO, the construction was shoddy). But then, as I pissed, IN A TOILET, I started to realize that we're living in the dream, dudes!

Yeah, there's some shitty times at the moment, but when else has communication been easier? When else has information been a click away? Do you know what writing a college paper was like in 1957? Shiiiiiii'!

Plumbing, in and of itself, is one of the greatest things ever! Yes, a warm shower and running water has been around for a good bit of time, but do you really appreciate how awesome it is? It really is. How nice is it to sit in a warm house and do your business, wipe with double-ply, quilted, soft toiltet paper and then jump in a hot shower when it's 18 degrees outside? It's pretty tits!

I've always been a "romantic", in that I've longed for life in the yesteryear, but I have to admit, a chamber pot, draughty castle and cold bathwater kind of lose their luster when I really think about it. ;)

What's my point? I don't know, I'm wasted and I think I'm being all over the place. I guess the point is that, maybe, instead of focusing on how terrible things are(and there is some merit to that), we shoudl think about all the good things we have. Because, really, 40 years ago in the "golden age", none of us would have even "known" eachother.

Ahhhhhh, fuck it! I can only be a ray of sunshine for so long before it becomes painfully abnormal. :p

Point is, next time you take a shit, be happy it's inside and free of scary spiders like the outhouse at a place I hunt at. :p

That's true. A family definitely does change things. I don't know WTF I would do if I had a bun in the oven right now. But, really, aside from wants I think I could support some chiterlins. Not like I grew up, but I they wouldn't be destitute.

And I guess that's the problem, though, isn't it? For the first time in American history(or so I've been told, though I believe it), this generation is not living better than their parents. I'm not able to give my kids a better life than I had/have. Of course, that's pretty hard to top, but still.... I just kind of assumed if my Dad makes whatever money he does, then I would be doing better since he went to "barber college" and I went to a real university.

But that's not the case. In fact, I can't even afford to live in their house if they gave it to me! One time I told them I was going to feed them poison cookies so I could have their house and stop paying rent. Dude, property taxes are over 600/month on that fucking place! Add in all the utilities and shit and it's cheaper for me to rent. WTF?!?! It's even paid off and I couldn't afford to live in it. That's fucked up!

Anyway, I digress..... Again with a little optimism/plain realism; yes, it sucks right now. People are getting laid off left and right and the "best" jobs you can find are for $10/hr doing retard work. BUT, it will rebound again. It will just take a minute. For those of you who have stocks and are all worried, BUY MORE! The market is down, but it isn't going to stay this way.

The only people who are truly fucked right now are those who are retired or close to it. They won't get the benefir of the rebounding market. But, have no fear, the economy will come back and it will come back stronger than ever.....until it collapses again. ;)

I have lots of practice. ;) Plus, no matter how fucked up I have ever been, I have never lost my ability to grasp reality. Kind of ruins acid trips sometimes.... LOL

The economy sucks balls. I lost ALOT of money. But hey, I still have my nice plasma tv and leather couch...and thats all I need.

Although I moved into a more expensive place, and bought some nice furniture and all new appliances...I have recently found myself cutting back alot on going out to movies and eating out at nice restraunts. I was going to adopt a dog to keep me company, but I may not do that now because times may get worse.

LOL at watercloset. :D

The thing that scares me right now is the amount of manufacturing we've lost. I'm not sure what replaces that and that's what I do. But yea, we don't high-roll like many of our friends and i've been looked down upon when I put the brakes on these vacations our friends try to get us to join them on.

I have regrets of living as fat as we did for so long. I had no idea things would get this shaky. My wife just turned down a decent severance package (~8 months pay) so we're hoping you fuckers start buying new pc's! We'll be fine though. We're healthy, boys are healthy, fuck it.

Did you really? Or did you lose "market money"? Did you lose any of your principle(which WILL rebound) or did you just lose your "gains"? If the latter, then you didn't lose shit!

"I lost 50k in my home!" No you didn't, your home is not an investment. It's a place for you to live. YOu don't make money on your home. You make babies and give them a roof with it.(not directed towards you in specific)

It's the whole concept of net worth. It's ridiculous! I have a very expensive baseball card. Is it really worth whatever they say it is? NO! It's only worth what some schmuck is willing to dish out. If all I get is the dollar seventy five(but I expect a stick of gum, too! :p) that I paid for it, did I lose anything? NO!

I am basically back to where i started. I consider it a loss when I have 95k, and now I only have 60k left in mutual funds. That was time and investment...which can be considered easrned money in a way. If you had it, and could have pulled it out, and now it's gone...then it can be considered lost. Both our points are valid.

After my stocks go back up, I will be pulling them out, and wont be investing in the market again. I don't trust the government or the market anymore. I will most likely be investing in something solid like real estate.

Sorry, I got a new HP for Christmas last year. No new computers for me anytime, soon. Does she work for Dell? You know, there are two things people think about when they think about Dell: 1) their obnoxious comercials with that guy saying, "dude, get a Dell" and 2) their horseshit, outsourced customer service.

I can help with one of those...... ;) :D

You're right about the manufacturing, though. And, again with the optimism/realism, it will come back. Is it going to be soon enough to benefit you or I? I don't know. I hope so! But the fact of the matter is, is that cheap goods are only good for people who have money to spend. Therefore, if all of the decent paying jobs have disappeared and all we are is a "service economy", then no one will have enough money to sustain billion dollar businesses, so they will HAVE to bring back manufacturing here in order to create an income base.

As much as I'm a GM man, Henry Ford was a friggin' genius and great business man. He sold an expensive product. A very expensive, luxury product. What did he do? He paid his employees more than anyone else so that they could afford to buy his crap. What did that do? It caused his very well off(in comparisson) employees to buy what they were making, which, in turn, gave the money right back to him and also made Ford the leading brand at the time. Friggin' genius!

It's going to have to happen again. We can't survive without it. Plus, as the oil situation illustrates, reliance on any foreign nation is dangerous. It's much, much better to be completely self-sufficient, which is what the US used to be, whihc is why we have done what we have.

Hopefully, we see that again.

ps- Grizzly 2012....wait, 2016 I'll be old enough to be Pres. Vote for me then. ;)

PPS- OLM went down as I pm'd you, so I sent it to you yahoo.

I'm not sure which statement made me cringe more. I'll address the latter first:

"I will most likely be investing in something solid like real estate"

Huh?!?! You realize that home values have plummeted recently, don't you? That's half of the "reason" we're in a recession. It's not solid at all(ask Japan) and, again, you're playing with perceived value. When perception falls off, so does your property value.

"After my stocks go back up, I will be pulling them out, and wont be investing in the market again. "

There were two types of people when the stock market collapsed in '28 or whenever the fuck it was. There was the guy, like you, who saw his "wealth" disintegrate in a day who then jumped out the window of the BOT.

And then there was the guy who said, "ouch, that hurts. But, you know, I still have 1000 left in my pocket. I'm going to pick up these penny stocks and ride it out...." and his ancestors are still swimming in the money.

Just a thought.

That is a great post Grizz (minus the ass-wiping remarks :p).
Sorry. I have a toilet paper fetish. :p I honestly judge people based upon what toilet paper they buy. If I go to a person's house and they have cheap TP, then, man, I don't need to be friends anymore. LOL

More importantly, if I ever go to girl's house and she has the TP being dispensed from the bottom and not over the top, then it's love, man! ;)

HaHa, i think you took both of those quotes the wrong way. I said I would be pulling my funds out after they GO BACK UP....that means I will ride it out until the stock market is doing spectacular again. When I said solid like real estate...prices will be low on homes for a while...yes it sucks now, but in a couple years they will be back up. I say solid because I can see it. i consider it a better investment than the stock market.
