Hardwood floors

This is my 1st hardwood floor job. It's not perfect but it's pretty good,,,, good enough for me anyway.:D

But.....the wood itself is a little different. One thing I like about it is I've never seen another house with it before, plus it's about the hardest wood around, so it should last forever. I think it's one of those things you either love or hate.

What do you think? The wood is Brazilian walnut.

Time for a coating of the ol Builder's Beige. LOL That floor looks awsome! I've been dbating on redoing my kitchen/living areas. I'd need to scrape the popcorn off the ceiling, instal can lighting and put new flooring down. How did you put the wood down? Glue? What sub floor did you have?

What, no love for the blue?:D It really does look better in person than it does in the pics though. I didn't think I would like it either. The entry and stair wall will be a light tanish color. You can see where it is cut in by the door. That whole area will get 5 1/2" white baseboard and 2 piece crown at the top.

Spanky, the hardwood went right over the OSB subfloor. It's tounge and groove and I borrowed a buddies floor nailer, which shoots a giant staple, to tack it down. The boards along the wall that I couldn't use the nailer on, are glued and finished nailed.

Entry

Here is what I mean. You can't tell from the picture but the paint along the stairs and the paint around the entry are the same color. The color along the steps is more accurate.

I think you're right, the finish work will make a huge difference. So, the wood was prefinished I take it. I'd have to go over concrete so i'm assuming it's simply glued. That scares me a little. I did 700sq ft of Pergo and ended up hating that stuff. It always had a hazey look and was extremely loud even with the heavy underlayment. Nice work, man.

Looks cool man. I like contemporary stuff.. out of the norm so I think it looks really cool.

I think you should have done a camo floor. have boards that are two different shades of green, a gray and a black.. THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN AWESOME.. :D

I've given myself an idea.. one that would certainly piss my wife off if we ever do another hardwood floor..lol

I just put in about 800 sqft of this a month ago into our new house. The crown and the base boards make the room imo. You did a hell of a job as I know how a bitch fitting around door jambs and room transitions can be. I like that walnut too, looks different but flows nicely.

thl it looks like you even installed the flushmount vents? if so those can be fun huh?:) just because the wood is hard don't think it will not scratch. brazilian cherry is hard as hell but it is one of the easiest to scratch. i see these new products all the time but i must admit i have not seen a floor like that one yet.

spanky i hate the pergo "floating floors" too. they sound like you are walking on a drum all the time. you can get planks that you direct glue to concrete and make it look more like a real hardwood floor. some of them can actually get one sanding out of them to refinish the floor.

Yeah, those flushmount vents were a real treat. I screwed up though and shorted myself one so we stopped the floor a foot or so short in the dining room until I can get another one. I told my wife we could just get some drop ins but she isn't having any of that. They do look nice but suck putting in.

I put wood laminate in the kids rooms upstairs. It's pretty easy to do and looks good, it just doesn't feel the same. The stuff my daughter picked out was a little thicker stuff and that does feel better than the cheap stuff my son picked out. I imagine the real good laminate (8-9mm) would be pretty nice, but it costs as much or more than real hard wood.

Engineered hardwoods can be pretty nice. They make both a glue down and a no glue type. Look for the stuff with the thicker top layer of real wood. Some use up to an 1/8" or more and you can actually sand and refinish those down the road.

But really, I don't mind the small scratches that real wood gets. It adds character in my opinion. Our house we live in now had carpet when we bought it but we soon found out it was hardwood underneath. We eventually refinished it and although it's far from perfect, it looks pretty good for a 60 year old floor, and there is plenty of meat left on it to refinish several more times.

I think you need a banister on that staircase. Looks dangerous! :p
It wont be long now. The trim is being delivered today at high noon. I'll be painting and staining all weekend long. Well at least in between beer breaks. :D
