damn the bad luck!

well guys and gals, as you all know because i have whined about it on occasion, my back is killing me. as i cried about in the past not being able to do deads or squats for some time now, and am quite bummed about this matter, because we all know those are the two best core exercises there are. well, a couple months ago i started to incorporate front squats on legs day. of course i was just doing girly man weight and going ass to ground of course, i had gotten to the point where i was doing 225lbs and 3-5 sets of 10 to try to get some of my legs back. two weeks ago i got to lazy to bend over to load 4-45lb plates, soooo i grabbed the 100's to save a little time, so i only had to bend over twice while loading the bar. first set was fine, i think i did a set of 6 reps. i was supersetting as i do always so i can cram as many sets in my allotted time of training. i got back to the squat rack for my second set and on the second rep i flinched a teeensy little bit.....and i felt the dreaded "pop". i immediately said "uh oh?" and i stopped my weight session right then and there. wellllll, as i say that was two weeks ago, and i have been in agony since! you might say, so juaneye...did you stop lifting and give your body a rest? and i of course would tell you....ARE YOU FRIGGEN KIDDING? DO I LOOK LIKE A PUSSY TO YOU? so my usual every day back ache problem is about ten fold now with no end in sight. back pain sucks, i waste so much time with mind over matter in order to not let this pain ruin my productivity that i'm a little depressed about it. sorry for the long winded cry session folks, but i'm hoping this extra pain i'm dealing with now subsides soon so i will feel like my usual old sorry assed self again.

have you considered either a deep tissue massage to release the tightness/tension (if its muscle related) or a chiropractor?

i get deep tissue done every couple of months or so...a nice long 2 hours session...definitely worth it! my back gets really tight and sore when my heavy squat and dead days get too close together + add in cardio and such and sometimes i am always struggling. at that point i'll switch an exercise either t-bar rows in place of deads or leg press in place of squats depending on where my progression is on both.

my issues are arthritis and bulging disc's. i have seen a chiropractor for almost 30 years. i do acupuncture, massage, chiro and drug therapy (muscle relaxers & percoset when times are real bad) i'm an old fart so i have a life time of working and playing physically hard in my back ground.....i'm stuck with what i have to deal with. for the most part i deal with chronic medium pain, but some times i have to live with serious back pain. :(

Juaneye...I probably dont have to tell you this but if you have bulging disks squats are not the exercise to be doing. Squats compress the vertebra and on a bluging disk that ain't good...deads aren't much better since they exert stress on the entire spine...ever see an orthopedic surgeon? They can do a procedure now thats less invasive to correct the disk problem...may get you back in the gym better than ever...

the ortho will definitely tell you to stop lifting heavy weights though...mine has been telling me for years that I need to give it up...I've had both shoulders scoped in the last few years and it caused me to lighten the weight load...I'm 61...been lifitng for 30+ years...

i've been trying to avoid any surgery, but yeah i pretty much gave up on squats and deads about 6-7 years ago, out of necessity. i have not lifted much for the last 6-8 weeks, i've only been doing cardio, stretching, and tai chi to give my body a break. i took off about 25 lbs, so i'm a puny 225 now and feel like a good gust of wind could knock me over. i had hoped dropping the weight would help with the chronic pain, but it has not really....sooooo i'm going to start lifting light again, let me see...oh yeah, that is today so i must finish this cup of jo and get to the weight room. thanks for the response though Willie2.

p.s. glad i'm not the only old fart around hitting the gym. :)

What exercises does the Chiro have u doing? Does he have decompression table?
no he doesn't. i've seen him for almost 20 years now, and he is comfortable with my knowledge of physical rehab, so that he just tells me to do what my body will let me, as long as i'm not over doing it. he says i made the correct decision about the squats and deads when i gave them up. he's satisfied with my bicycling, leg press, leg curls, and leg extensions along with a few other different exercises for leg work. he really does not feel he needs to lay out a plan for me. he likes to lift also, so i feel we have a mutual understanding of what i need to do as far as my routine is. decompression sounds good though, a number of years ago i was doing some commercial fishing and i did some diving, man being in the water and not having gravity work it's evil magic on my spine was almost as good as getting some pussy!

p.s. Thick, i think the girls in our avy's are sisters!! :D

ya i wouldn't mind meeting both of them lol!

U might want to think about decompression but there are a couple exercises you want to do with it.

Juaneye I am sorry to hear about your back. I have had firsthand experience with it and know how completely debilitating it can be. I cannot go the route of prescription painmeds, so when I get the "pop" I know I gotta go easy for a bit. Once you get back on track you may want to consider machine hacksquats and the legpress for your quads. I know they don't give you the same compound movements and pale in comparison to actual squats but you need to know your limitations as you get older and work with what you have. My doc told me that a strong core can benefit a weak back, so perhaps you need to work on the abs as well? I know that heat therapy does me a world of good when I'm in pain, a sit in the whirlpool or sauna loosens up my problem, of course I am not in quite as deeply as you are.....hope you are feeling better soon.
