But They're Nice Little Doggies!

i can't seem to remember the last time i read about cocker spaniels ripping apart a human being limb from limb.

RUBIDOUX, Calif. — A 60-year-old man was mauled to death by a pair of pit bulls Friday in the backyard of his rural Southern California home.

The man was taking a cigarette break when the male and female pit bulls attacked him shortly after noon, said Sgt. Dennis Gutierrez of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

The man, who was the grandfather of the dogs' owner, died at the scene. His name was not released.

County Animal Services spokesman John Welsh said the dogs were euthanized later in the afternoon. The male dog weighed 107 pounds and was about 3 years old, while the female weighed 52 pounds and was about 6 years old.

Welsh said it was unclear why the dogs suddenly attacked the man, who was familiar with them and had played with them before. But he noted that neither dog had been spayed.

"Unaltered dogs are always more aggressive," Welsh said. "We always recommend that for family pets, people spay or neuter their dogs."

Gutierrez called the incident a "vicious attack and very tragic for the family right before the holidays."

Wow, that sucks. Sad for that family. I gurantee you that cocker spaniels bite people many many times more than pits. The problems is, they cant do the damage a pit can.

According to the American Temperament Society a pit bull has above average temperament...shocking Juan, I know lol. They are at 84.3% passing while the average is 81.6% passing.

I really don't understand the love of pitbulls. Why are they so popular these days? There is no reason to own one unless it to demonstrate how big your dick is by having a tough dog, much like buying an expensive car.

Whats the reasoning behind loving any breed of dog? I'm sure its all the same. What ever specific breed you are more familiar with is most likely the breed you will always own. People love poodles but I sure as fuck would never own one.

I think loving a certain breed is a mix of liking how they look and how they act. That goes for the normal human being. Not some trashy fuck who only does it to look cool. I know that I love most types of mastiffs and Rotts. I do like how they look but also really like their personality traits.

Juaneye,
You also should take into consideration that the area that those dogs attacked that guy is a very very ghetto trash area. The standard of living in that area is not very high and that usually doesnt produce the most responsible/smartest people. I am somewhere in between on the subject. The breed does get a really bad rap since there are plenty that are great family dogs. The problem comes with irresponsible breeding (#1 problem) and 2ndly would be irresponsible owners.

I did a little bit of research on my dog before I bought her I was not about to have a dog in the house that was not going to get along with my kids...this comes directly from the American Kennel Club website...

Staffordshire Bull Terrier Breed Standard
Terrier Group
General Appearance
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a smooth-coated dog. It should be of great strength for its size and, although muscular, should be active and agile.

Size, Proportion, Substance
Height at shoulder: 14 to 16 inches. Weight: Dogs, 28 to 38 pounds; bitches, 24 to 34 pounds, these heights being related to weights. Non-conformity with these limits is a fault. In proportion, the length of back, from withers to tail set, is equal to the distance from withers to ground.

Head
Short, deep through, broad skull, very pronounced cheek muscles, distinct stop, short foreface, black nose. Pink (Dudley) nose to be considered a serious fault. Eyes--Dark preferable, but may bear some relation to coat color. Round, of medium size, and set to look straight ahead. Light eyes or pink eye rims to be considered a fault, except that where the coat surrounding the eye is white the eye rim may be pink. Ears--Rose or half-pricked and not large. Full drop or full prick to be considered a serious fault. Mouth--A bite in which the outer side of the lower incisors touches the inner side of the upper incisors. The lips should be tight and clean. The badly undershot or overshot bite is a serious fault.

Neck, Topline, Body
The neck is muscular, rather short, clean in outline and gradually widening toward the shoulders. The body is close coupled, with a level topline, wide front, deep brisket and well sprung ribs being rather light in the loins. The tail is undocked, of medium length, low set, tapering to a point and carried rather low. It should not curl much and may be likened to an old-fashioned pump handle. A tail that is too long or badly curled is a fault.

Forequarters
Legs straight and well boned, set rather far apart, without looseness at the shoulders and showing no weakness at the pasterns, from which point the feet turn out a little. Dewclaws on the forelegs may be removed. The feet should be well padded, strong and of medium size.

Hindquarters
The hindquarters should be well muscled, hocks let down with stifles well bent. Legs should be parallel when viewed from behind. Dewclaws, if any, on the hind legs are generally removed. Feet as in front.

Coat
Smooth, short and close to the skin, not to be trimmed or de-whiskered.

Color
Red, fawn, white, black or blue, or any of these colors with white. Any shade of brindle or any shade of brindle with white. Black-and-tan or liver color to be disqualified.

Gait
Free, powerful and agile with economy of effort. Legs moving parallel when viewed from front or rear. Discernible drive from hind legs.

Temperament
From the past history of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the modern dog draws its character of indomitable courage, high intelligence, and tenacity. This, coupled with its affection for its friends, and children in particular, its off-duty quietness and trustworthy stability, makes it a foremost all-purpose dog.

Disqualification
Black-and-tan or liver color.

Approved November 14, 1989
Effective January 1, 1990

The only problem is that it is a strong dominant breed by nature and it doesnt matter much about what the AKC says if the dog was A) not bred with good temperment dogs and B) not socialized correctly. Im not saying this dog is a bad choice, I am just giving my input on my experience and knowledge from working with so many of the dominant breeds. I think you originally said that it has been with kids and other animals before, so thats a big plus.

Yeah the prior owners had a 175lb bullmastiff that she used to play with all the time and she was raised around 4 kids from ranging from the age 18 down to a 2 yo. That was my biggest reason for getting her she was around kids I actually saw her interact with the 2yo before I took her and the kid would lay all over her and she would just lay there and let him do what ever he wanted to her and not budge...I have had her for two weeks and she is absolutely excellent with my kids.....I am very glad I got her...

No, it's not. Pits have become "trendy" in the last 5-10 years. They're a new status symbol. "I have a tough dog, because I'm a pussy myself. But don't fuck with me, because my dog will eat you."

It's like my roomate and guns. He's got bunches of them and that's all he talks about. He wants to be "tough" and "powerful", but his aversion to fatigue and getting hit in the face kind of negates that, so he buys guns so that he can feel powerful.

I bought my 1st pit by pure accident. I was drunk one night at a party and a friend of mine had this little puppy and my girl wanted it...so I bought her right there. Ever since then, I really like them. I don't own but one and think they are great dogs if socialized and taught correct things.
