Are laptops a fire hazard

I think you jinxed me THL. I leave my lt last night while i ran my son all over the town for practices.I come back and my office smells like smoke. My laptop is shut off and it smells like it burned inside. The plug in in the back (ac power plugin) has some melted plastic and was really hot. WTF is this about?

p.s. It turned on when i got home last night but i had to hold the plug in the hole so i wasnt on much. Today it is working just fine and the plug in went in pretty easy. Last night it was a tight fit like any of wylies girls
Ne ideas?

yes the original.
I did a little research for you.

The 1st thing you need to do is find out if the fans are working. Also, if they seem to be working, are they covered in dust/lint? If so, you need to clean them asap.

What model lap top do you have? Seems there are a few brands that use a certain type of CPU that are prone to this. Does your keyboard get hot too?

BTW, people have burned their houses down with malfunctioning lap tops, so you need to get this fixed.

Here is a quote from the article:

so troubleshooting includes making sure you have unobstructed airflow to the BOTTOM of the laptop for the fan to function. If you run the thing on a bed, or on your lap with the fan grille blocked by your leg, it's going to cook for sure!

I dont leave it on at night any longer to mess up movies. thanks for the search and advice. wonder how u clean the damn fans?

You'll have to get a can of compressed air and open her up.

Can you hear the fans running?

Sounds like a problem with the connector inside the Laptop on the mother board. It's what you plug your power cable into. It's a small little piece thats connected to the motherboard. I had mine break off inside so i tore the whole laptop apart, and i do mean the entire freakin' thing to get to it. I got to it...but i haven't touched the Laptop since then.

THick how old is your laptop. Like THL said make sure the fans are on. Get a can of compressed air and just unload on it. Try spraying through the back panel of the laptop where all your connections are. There are some gaps in there that may help clear some dust and whatnot.

I wouldnt recomend taking your case apart. It's not that hard to do but the screws are very very very small on some of them and several of them are hidden.

I suggest you call Gateway and see if they had any recalls. There have been several Laptop batteries recalled in the past that caused fires as well. It could be that as well. Get the model# off the battery and check that as well as the AC Adapter.

I think it's the plug where you plug your AC Adapter into the back of it. Unless you've been hard on it it should not wear out that fast.
