Toshiba to give up on HD DVD, end format war: source
is planning to give up on its HD DVD format for high definition DVDs, conceding defeat to the competing Blu-Ray technology backed by Sony Corp.

"We have entered the final stage of planning to make our exit from the next generation DVD business," said the source, who asked not to be identified. He added that an official announcement could come as early as next week.

Shares in Toshiba Corp. (6502.TO) moved sharply higher in early trading Monday as investors and analysts welcomed signals from the electronics company that it's reconsidering whether it's worth plowing more money into its next-generation DVD business as the movie world begins to put its weight behind a rival format developed by Sony Corp. (6758.TO).

Toshiba shares were up over 5% after people familiar with the situation told The Wall Street Journal Sunday that Toshiba is highly likely to pull the plug on its HD DVD version of next-generation DVD technology, as early this week.

Yep...IMHO it's better than 360 and has the cheapest BLU-Ray avail.
Microshaft tried to take the console side of things by making the 360 "cheaper" thus pushing the PS3 out and getting a strong hold for HD...however, most people i talked to didn't realize that it didn't include the HD player...unlike the PS3....when you add the cost of the console and the HD player together it was the same damn price as the PS3...and that was b4 Sony dropped the price of the PS3...Ebay for new 80gb PS3 is just over $400...

I actually have both blu-ray and HD. (I bought a PS3 for the blu-ray).

I didn't really care which one won.. I just wanted a winner because it was confusing to the masses. An industry standard means mom and pop can just walk into wal-mart or best buy and say give me a hi-def player and point me toward the hi-def dvd's. And boom they're in business. Before it took a 30 minute explanation by a ignorant salesman just to explain the differance in the two standards and most people got scared and walked away because they were confused and afraid to commit to one format over the other. An industry standard is good for every body. (And people were really weird about picking a side and wanting to fight about their favorite side.. You should see some of the bitter pissed off people over at AVS posting how they'll never buy a blu-ray player etc... lol, These are the same guys who spent the last year telling everyone that HD was going to win and was really the better standard and how blu-ray was going to lose etc I suppose the blu-ray fanboys rubbing it in hasn't helped this bitter ass people..lol. People can argue all they want I don't care, in the end we finally have a winner and that's all I really care about... )

But since HD has gone belly up I expect I should be able to get HD DVD's dirt cheap when the fire sales start. Amazon.com already has a bunch of HD DVD's for under $10 a piece. I expect I'll be able to buy most HD DVD's for around $5-$8 a piece come may and june.

The biggest problem sony is going to have is pricing themselves out of the popular market. IIRC Blu-ray and HD sales combined was just a little over 1% of the market. If blu-ray doesn't make cheaper players and sell their movies cheaper they'll end up cutting their own throats as people won't pony up $10-$15 more just to have the hi-def version.

Oh.. Toshiba isn't done by any means, be assured. I believe they will get licensing very soon to start producing Blu-ray players. This will help a ton to drive the prices down and make them even more affordable to the general population.

On a side note, one of the things I find amazing is how many people buy hi-def tv's but don't have hi-def programing. Most don't want to pony up the extra$10 per month to have hi-def programming. So many people think that a hi-def tv takes standard programing and makes it into hi-def.

I think this is where directv and dish and cox and cablecom are going to help a lot. The more hi-def programing they make available to people the more people will see the difference between the two and this will push people toward buying hd media.

Price is the biggest factor right now. BUT on that note, I remember VCR's being $400 dollars and I remember DVD players being $800!. Hell, I remember my folks buying their first vcr and having to finance it! The frigging machine had a cord from the remote control to the unit.. lol

So everything is relative.. IMO if history is any teacher I suspect we'll see a sub $200 player by next spring and a sub $150 player within two years.

the only player i'll need is already in the PS3...lol

and yeah i agree...Sony, et al better get their act together now that they are top dogs on the HD portion of things...that's one of the reasons i have yet to shell out the thousands of duckets necessary to upgrade my fucking receiver, tv and player...no standard and the fact that the movies cost a shit load compared to sub $20 DVD movies...i don't really need to see the pimple on Jenna's ass while she's getting boned by TRex that bad...
