Largest Steroid Bust in U.S. history

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Federal drug officials say they've arrested 124 people and busted 56 labs in the largest illegal steroid investigation in U.S. history.

The Drug Enforcement Administration says it busted 56 steroid labs in 27 states.

The 18-month investigation, dubbed "Operation Raw Deal," targeted traffickers who allegedly imported raw materials from China and used them to make anabolic steroids, human growth hormone and insulin growth factor, the Drug Enforcement Administration said.

"Today we reveal the truth behind the underground steroid market: dangerous drugs cooked up all too often in filthy conditions with no regard to safety, giving Americans who purchase them the ultimate raw deal," DEA Administrator Karen Tandy said in a statement.

Authorities made arrests in 27 states, including busts in Los Angeles, California; New York City; San Diego, California; Providence, Rhode Island; and Kansas City, Missouri.

They seized more than 530 pounds of raw materials and 11.4 million steroid dosage units in the United States, officials said, enough to supply hundreds of users.

Most of the arrests were made between Thursday and Sunday, the DEA said.

Chinese authorities cooperated with the investigation, which targeted 37 companies in China, the DEA said.

So far, one Chinese lab has been shut down, officials said.

The Chinese "have done everything" they were asked to do, said DEA spokesman Rusty Payne.

The operation, according to the DEA, also cracked down on underground trafficking of counterfeit medications as well as Web sites that were distributing materials that helped in converting raw steroid ingredients into the finished product.

"DEA successfully attacked the illegal steroid industry at every level of its distribution network-from the manufacturers in China who supply the raw materials, to the traffickers in the United States who market the deadly doses," the DEA statement said.

Besides China, other countries which cooperated in the operation included Mexico, Canada, Belgium, Australia, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Thailand, officials said

This is crazy. I wondered how long it would take for other countries to cooperate. China especially. Granted I don't know how things work regarding source operations, I cannot fathom being a source right now. Has anyone seen any posts from friends of the busted on any of the boards?

I wonder if it was worth it. An 18 month, world-wide investigation? Holy man. If this entire operation cost less than $500M I'd be extremely surprised. From investigation, to prosecution, and imprisonment I bet it's much, much more. A billion???????

Look at Victor Conte. Millions went into that investigation. It was proven this guy was producing and distributing steroids to athletes of the highest profile. How many months did he get? Six? Nine tops? I don't even think it was that long.

As a tax payer, I say it isn't worth it. My opinion is not biased, either. For $500M (I'm guessing) I want to see a major return. A big fucking return in exchange for that kind of dough.

Shaq, I've tried to stay out of your posts , as we previously agreed, but I felt compelled to tell you that its my opinion that you are exactly right.

What even warrants this operation ?

What am I missing ? Is this based on the outrage over Barry hitting number 756 ? Is this out of some fear for an 18yo hs athletes well-being ? Is it to ensure that the impending Olympics are going to be as clean as possible?

How can you say 'clean Olympics' and 'Beijing' in the same sentence anyway, knowing how smoggy that shitty dump of a metropolis is ? They're going to have to work their asses off just to get tourists to attend that shithole to watch the boring olympics .

Being a natural conspiracy theorist..I have to think something more sinisiter is at work here. Pharmaceutical companies are losing a shitload of money because of the good that gear does do. Because of how much cheaper Jin's are than Humatrope's .

I'm left here in my hotel room, wondering what is the real reason behind this action ?
