fish tanks

how many of you peeps are into fish, freshwater or salt water?

i am looking for a new house and one room will have a large fish tank. my good family friend is moving and she has like a 150 gallon tank.

i was at the pet store the other day looking at what kind of fish i want and i think im going to go with 2 salt water sting rays

whats your opinion on fish as a hobby?

also, anyone know anything about those japanese fighting fish, the ones that have the spines sticking out all over the place.

this sums up my saltwater hobby stint, lots of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
lots of work, lots of dead fish, saltwater is a full time job the bigger the tank the easier. I had a live rock set-up, if I was to do it again I would just do fake coral & call it good. It will start as a hobby then turn into a full time job.

Hey , call me homo but I know what you mean ! I love when its dark but the tank is lit up and ahhhhh, very relaxing. I used to have one of those small sharks, that could grow up to a foot, but it died at about 5 inches.

Ive always wanted a big aquarium with big, exotic fish....probably later in life :D

I have fish too, but I get away with saying its the kids.....

Salt water is nice but costly and alot of work..

Fresh water has some nice fish and is cheap ONCE you get the tank up and running and all your levels are tested and good, then the fish will live...

150 gallon tank? make sure the floor truses are sterdy... That tank will be around 1000 lbs when full... I have seen sagging floors....

Simeus (sp) fighting fish are shitty, They will only survive by them selves as they will attack other fish... But more importantly they ONLY live in about 5 feet of water... In the wild they are mostly found in animal foot prints... thats the male i'm assuming your talking about... cause the females are ugly..

My good buddy has the same setup...I believe he has like a 250gallon tank, has tons of cool fish, along with a puffer (just passed, had some disease) but I would love to get into this...but he said it is around 1500$/year for a basic setup...I just don't have that...nor the time between my dogs and girls to keep up with it :(

lionfish, thats what i was thinking of

here is a link to a pic

i had no idea that salt water tanks were so much, growing up i had 2 friends and their dad both had huge ones. they were always buying new/cool looking fish so i thought it was a pretty cheap hobby, guess i was wrong LOL

sounds like if this is something i want to do, i will have to do it later, as i dont have a lot of money to blow. i am getting the whole tank/set up and stand for free, i know that alone would clost me thousands

as for the weight issue, itll go in the basement of my home, im sure that would be a better choice than upstairs.

everything with salt water is expensive. the live coral used to be over 20 bucks /lb iirc

As for fresh water i always loved oscars. They are a lil messy but they are like pets. They seriously wag their tales when you come into a room. Very sociable. mainly b/c they want to eat all the time lol!

Oscars will jump out of the water and take food from your hand. Pretty cool shit.

had a few freshwater and one of my best friends had a nice salt water. I was going to go with salt until i did all the help setting his up and it was easy to go against. If you ever end up very wealthy then go with a nice salt tank in the wall. stick with fresh til that time comes

i went to a nice dinner party for my wife and the house it was at had a really nice tank.

it was built into the wall like you said, and the room behind the wall is where all the pumps and 'fish stuff' were.

so majority of the tank was behind the wall in that room, lift the lid to feed the fish, ect, but the front was flush with the wall so it looked like a picture hanging on the wall! it was very nice

thick what kind of fish did you prefer in fresh water, just the oscars you spoke of earlier? im assuming anything smaller than oscars, the oscars will eat?

yeah u dont want anything with the oscars. At least i dont think they have any good tank mates. I just loved oscars b/c of their personality and how they will jump up and take food out of your hand and are always happy to see you. Even if it is only to get fed lmao! it is like they are wagging their fins like a dog wags its tail

I had a jack dempsey. very pretty but not social. Like a piranha.

Oscars will devour minnows or you can get the pellets that they will jump out of the water and take from your hand.

I have had dragon fish, betas, bugsys, guppies, and several other fish. Oscars have been my favorite by far

The tiger oscar is black with orange stripes. Albino is white with orange stripes. I have seen black with silver stripes as well. In that size tank, they will get the size of a blue gill pretty much lol!

They do make a mess if you dont feed them live fish. I am just talking about food waste that sifts into the rock on bottom. U cant really tell until u clean the tank lol

Oh and make sure you get a BIG algae eater b/c those pricks will even eat the algae eater lmao. I am telling you they always act hungry. It is crazy
