Actor Heath Ledger is dead, the New York Police Department said Tuesday.

Heath Ledger was found dead in his Manhattan apartment.

The Academy Award nominated actor was 28.

Ledger's housekeeper found him dead in his Manhattan apartment, New York police said.

He died at 3:26 p.m., they said.

The New York Fire Department received a call at 2:27 Tuesday responding to a "cardiac arrest call" in New York. Police suspect a possible drug overdose as pills were found next to the bed.

They found an unresponsive male dead at the scene.

In 2005, the actor played Ennis Del Mar in "Brokeback Mountain," about two cowboys who had a secret relationship.

The role earned him the Oscar nomination.

I'm going to say suicide.

The body was found in bed and they now say there were a bunch of pills by the bed and body. Guy has no arrests and no history of substance abuse (that we know of anyway)..

my guess is he pulled the plug on himself and it wasn't an accident.

This is the kind of headline i expect from Brittney spears or Morton downey jr but not a guy like heath Ledger.. I checked him out on smoking gun and he's never been arrested for anything.

Heath Ledger's Friend: "We Saw It Coming"

"This is terrible and I'm in shock," a close friend of Ledger's tells Usmagazine.com. "But to tell you the truth... we saw it coming."

"Heath has gone though a rough road of trying to get sober," the source tells Us.

"Things were very dark," the source says. "His one joy was Matilda." Matilda is his 2-year-old daughter with ex-wife Michelle Williams. They split in September.

"Everything else was misery for him," adds the source. "Unfortunately he was too late in getting help."

Ledger, 28, was found dead, reportedly at Mary-Kate Olsen's apartment.

I don't believe that Mary kate thing is true as the police report says he was found in his own home in his own bed.

Suicide at 28 is terrible no matter who you are (if that be the case here), famous or not. Feel for his daughter and family.

But Ledger's friendly banter with park *****s was always punctuated by one recurring complaint: "He'd say, 'I'm very tired,' " Rivera recalls, "and he looked it."

Ledger, the type of actor who immersed himself in his film roles, spoke in a recent interview about how work-related stress gave him insomnia. During the shooting of his last completed film, The Dark Knight, Ledger told The New York Times in November that he often took the prescribed sleeping aid, Ambien, in an attempt to coax himself into a slumber.

"Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night," he told The Times. "I couldn't stop thinking. My body was exhausted and my mind was still going." Ledger continued to say that taking one pill had no effect on him. He'd have to take second to fall asleep, only to awake an hour later with his "mind still racing."

Ledger's reported hard-partying drinking at all hours of the night may have been another way for him to try and self-medicate himself to sleep. "He partied a lot," one friend of Ledger's told PEOPLE. "He didn't really stop partying. At nights when I was going home, he was just starting. He was part of the New York scene." Another club regular recalls that Ledger would arrive at Manhattan lounge, The Beatrice Inn, at 3:30 a.m., "and he never left until sunrise."

The cast had just completed filming in London, which actor Christopher Plummer characterized as "cold as bejesus" to Entertainment Weekly. "You know how damp it gets in London. And at night the temperature drops horribly, and that little breeze gets up. You have to wear tons of stuff," he said.

Plummer said that Ledger had a "terrible, lingering bug in London, and he couldn't sleep at all. We all -- I thought he'd probably got walking pneumonia," he told EW.

But not home to sleep, it seems. Instead, Ledger would be out for a walk in the park and perhaps he'd play a groggy game of chess with strangers. "He didn't seem to be such a good chess player," recalls Rivera, "but I'm not sure ..."

Ledger, perhaps, wasn't interested in winning or losing. He was just trying to calm his "racing" mind so he could once and for all get some sleep as the rest of the city woke up.
