Peak contraction?

Peak contraction?

To make a long story short, since I blew out my tricep I took 5 weeks off but since getting back to the gym I have started working out with lighter weights and working on total contraction of the muscle being worked. Sounds simple enough doesn't it?

I have been struggling with this somewhat since I started because on muscles like biceps it is not that hard, but on something like your lats or the back as a whole its tough, at least for me. On each rep I am holding the contraction at the peak of the movement and squeezing (or trying to) for at least 2 seconds before releasing slowly and going to the fully stretched position on each rep.

To give an example, I used to do 100lb one arm dumbell rows for 5-8 depending on how I felt that day. Now I'm using 75lbs for 10 or however many I can manage doing it like this.

The part I feel I'm struggling is its absolutely exhausting, mentally as well as physically. I feel far more tired/wornout doing workouts like this than I did lifting a heavier weight for the same amount of reps. DOMS is lasting for about 3 days on the muscle worked doing this. I get all shaky and shit frequently doing this towards the end of my workouts.

Am I screwing this up or am I just a pussy? Is this what competitors/pros are talking about when they mention the mind/muscle connection? All I know is its kicking my ass and it hurts.

you are definitely NOT a pussy, you are just tapping the muscle fibers differently than you usually do. our muscles get used to being worked in a certain way and it's like they get bored. now that you are tapping the fibers differently it's kind of like being a noob...friggen feels good to know you are tearing down those muscles to make em bigger and stronger don't it! :)

In highschool I was 150lbs and I use less weight on the lat pull down machine NOW then I did 8 years ago in high school. You are training differently and now doing each rep with the focus on your contraction...You are no longer just pushing and pulling weight..You are controlling it! Alot of people have problems leaving their ego at the door and training the way you are now...Enjoy the gains in muscle my friend!! ;)

Just to add---I'm taking a bbers view on this. If you are training to compete in PLing and more interested in the numbers that you push then this wouldn't be the route you take but if you are looking for maximum muscle growth opposed to strength gains then you are on the right track. Just had to clarify that.

That says alot lookin at your back in your current pic!

Oh, and I'm definitely not competing or powerlifting. I think I'm just coming to terms with my age and the wear and tear I've had over the years.

So far I've accumulated a torn hamstring, torn both calves (separate incidents), had severe cramping on many occasions, and most recently a partially ruptured tricep. I believe my intensity is there, I just gotta train smarter.

To quote a character in a movie:

"A man's got to know his limitations." - Harry Callahan - Magnum Force 1973

Oh and I learned how to check the ego once I inherited the George Jefferson pimpcut. Mooovin ooon Uppp!!:D
