How In The World?

--Guys--

How in the world is everything getting so dang ole' expensive? I remember when gas was .99 a gallon and things like milk were always $1 a gallon and eating out for the whole family was $30-$35...what happened?

Why is the world turning around? Why is inflation going up so bad, so quick? I mean I barely have enough bread in my bank with 2 car payments, house, gas, cell phone, electric (f'n expensive too), water, and FOOD!

This is just crazy!!!

I don't know but a lot of people I know aren't saving jack shit for retirement. I'm saving/investing what I can but worry about being able to put the little one(s) in college when the time comes. Not to mention retirement. My parents will retire comfortably because they don't do shit. No travel, fancy vehicles, expensive clothes, etc. We don't live like that. I envy people that live the simple life.

Don't even get me started on education brotha - that is way over prices, for honestly, something that doesn't even really pay out what you put in! You spend about $100,000+ in Univ. for 4-5 years...and you get jobs (unless you went to school for THAT job) just like everyone else and sometimes not even in the degree you have! It's a rip IMHO!

Now, for retirement - since there won't be SOCIAL SECURITY anymore by the time I am in need of it, I'm screwed! So hopefully life insurance and cd's will pay out ;)

What are your thoughts on this?? I'm saving for both retirement and my boys' education and often think "If the college fund dries out I'll just dip into my retirement." Now that I'm older and wiser I think, me spend my retirement so they can finish school? The GI Bill (then $325 and $390 a month) and a fucking job got me through. I don't want them to experience the same hardships as me (throwing out UPS trucks until midnight then going to school from 8-1) but I look back at that and feel a major sense of accomplishment. Should I put my kids in this same position? This one topic seriously perplexes me.

Tough call, but I'd see how much money I had at the time and make a decision...Maybe help support them while at school but have them take a loan for half of tuition to give them a sense of responsibility and cost...Or make the amnt you are willing to pay towards school directly impacted by how well or poor they do each semester. If I was a rich dude, I'd pay...if it would jeopardize my retirement then I'd settle for maybe half of tuition. tough decision indeed...That's why I'm not a daddy yet..Not ready to think about that stuff...Much props to you POPS!!

I seriously do not see how my parents do it...My dad brings home $400 a week in his check....They are paying a mortgage, plus a personal loan that he took out a few years back to buy more farm equiptment....I guess the good thing is they grow most of their food so they don't have to really worry about that....

Now you all have me thinking about what is going to happen in five years when William graduates, and how much college is going to cost for him...Then Hallie and Cody are both a year after him!!!! OMG!!!!

yep i agree... i took my wife and little girl to the movie last weekend and i think that little escapde cost me about $40/45...

we are not at the top of the food chain, nor are we on the bottom end of the food chain and it takes all we can do to pay what little we owe and save for the future... thank god we have no credit card bills, 2nd mortgages etc... to worry about...

i don't see how peoples that work at average paying jobs support a family... my wife and i ran the numbers on what we are paying extra just for gas every month and it came out to roughly $500/600 per month over what we were paying...

at some point something has to give...

ps,
my wife has free health insurance provided for her at her job, but mine cost us $450.00 per month out of our pocket!!! :(

sweets...

the only thing that is rising at about the same rate as health care cost is unfortunately the cost of education!!!

i can't wait for the day when im old and grey and i can tell my nieces "i remember when gas was 99 cents". by then it'll probably be $20 a gallon.

i don't plan on having children, so putting them through college wont be a worry. if anything i'll do what i can to help my brothers put their children through college. my oldest brother has twin girls, you can only imagine how expensive that will be when the time comes.

and when i retire i plan on packing up ship and moving to an island in the Caribbean. i'm dead serious. i've already looked into it.

Yes, that's what they say and it makes sense I guess. Junior's education won't do any good if mom and dad are living in the projects to make it happen. We've been participating in our employee stock purchase plan, where you get a 15% discount from the quarter's lowest stock price. It's worked out well but we suspended the contributions a few months ago when we were house hunting.

The funny thing is, i'm really hoping (and sometimes nievely counting on) that junior gets a scholarship somewhere! My new neighbor has 4 kids and lives in a 5000 sq ft house. It's obvious they do pretty well. He has two in college and one starting this year. I said "man, my wallet hurts just thinking about that!" He says nope, the two in college have scholarships, one for softball and the other for soccor. Then he went on to tell me he bought condos in these college towns that he'll sell when they graduate and make 40-50k each when they sell. Goddamn it must be fucking nice!

Its no diffrent up here. Its bullshit, out houseing market has gone through the roof and everything followed right after. Gas is now unafortable and I live in a small town where you have to drive to get somewhere. No busses or even a taxi service here. Gas today is $1.20 a LITRE. I'm more worried about today then the future of my kids. it cost me $628 a month for food its almost double what I use to pay. It's shitty but if my kids want to go to colledge there going to have to pay for it themselves. my oldest is 8 so by the time she goes to colledge it will be 3-4x the price now. Will it guarantee any of them a job....no.

yeah things are getting tough. As for the boy and school, i hope i can help him out but who knows. I donated plasma twice a week and worked at the fitness center. Also, ran the intramural sports for a year. That all got me out of school owing 100k instead of 120k or whatever most of my friends owed.
I used to be on the side of the fence that saves for retirement etc. Now I see people dying at 60 and its like wtf were they saving for?

That's hard to think - but the one thing you do have to think about is ---- are they mentally tough (did you do your job) if they have to go out and work until 11PM or 12AM as a waiter or hostess, and then go to school at 7 or 8 in the morning? Are they going to keep everything up? Or are they gonna let it all come crashing down? That's something you gotta watch for - it's not fun working for 6$/hr and after taxes bringing home 350$ a week while in school - I did that, and I hated my life...as you prolly hated it when you were doing UPS!
