Acute Psychosis

I suffered a bout of Acute Psychosis after having a lumbar fusion at
L4-L5. Finally after 2 1/2 weeks I was properly diagnosed and they snapped me out of it with Topamax and Zyprexa. I see my doctor in 3 months, in the meantime I'm still on these meds. Do you think they will take me off of them eventually or will I be on them forever?

They seem to act as "Invisible Handcuff's":)

Thanks Doctor,

Thanks Bro. I read that in the side effects. I'm on a low dose of 5 mg and I'm watching my diet very closely ~1200 calories per day. I gained a lot of weight pre back surgery eating a lot of comfort foods and ballooned up to 250 lbs. I'm at about 220 now. I don't suppose I'll be on this forever as it was more of an "episode" than an on going problem. Just want to see what the good Doctor thinks.

Thanks, TenMan

This should definately be a SHORT TERM drug for you. Acute psychosis following major surger is very common. I am actually surprised you have been on them as long as you have unless you have had previous epsiodes. Pain meds after a large surgery (hip replacement, fusion, appendectomy) are the main culprit. I would definately expect you to be off these soon. If your doctor won't wean you find one who will.

I'm on a 5 mg dose of zyprexa, but I'm not bipolar. They gave it to me to snap me out of the psychosis...and it worked. But, now the doc is keeping me on it and I really don't know why, since I'm fine now. I have to agree with you though, it has mellowed me out to the point where i could really give a shit about most things. On the other hand, it's kinda peaceful;)
